August 4, 1914 marks the first day of World War I. Above is a picture of the Battle of Argonne. Sometimes I wonder if it is one taken on my Great Uncle.
Many countries around the world are commemorating this Centenary of World War I. Here and here are some short readings if you are interested in reading up on the history and how it still affects us today.
On a very personal level, my Great Uncle, Thomas V. Flanigan, died at the Battle of Argonne Forest. He is buried at Meusse-Argonne American Cemetery in France. My father was named after Thomas V. by his mother, Isabel, after her brother who died there. My father passed away on August 5, 1994, so I will be remembering both these men. I will light a candle in memory too of all those who lost their lives in this war.
I also have another piece of music Ben Salmon's Army of Peace aka Ben Salmon Memorial. Ben Salmon was one of only a handful of people in the US who was a conscientious objector in World War I. Here is a link for those interested in reading about Ben Salmon.
As a footnote to this, when I was looking for a picture and did a google search of Battle of Argonne, I was very much surprised to see my Memorial Album cover amongst the pictures there. If you scroll down and look through the pictures here you will see it there. I don't how that kind of thing happens on the internet. I am humbled and honored to have seen it there though along with historical photos and maps pertaining to World War I.
I've made my World War I Memorial Suite available as a Free mp3 Download. You can download these pieces by going to the page named "More Albums" and scroll down to my Memorial Album to get your free download. Ben Salmon's Army of Peace is also available as a Free download too.
